Post Title: Trading Standards Officer
General
we are looking for a fully qualified Trading Standards Officer to join our local authority client on a temporary basis. The contract will be for a minimum of three months
Main Purpose:
Enforcement of consumer protection legislation to ensure that consumers throughout the Borough are protected against unscrupulous and unfair trading practices.
To promote and establish a structure of where both consumers and traders have availability to legal advice on all Trading Standards legislation.
Carry out functions of a Weights and Measures Inspector.
Summary of Responsibilities and Duties
Investigate complaints alleging breaches of consumer protection legislation.
Carry out testing and verification of weighing and measuring equipment.
Carry out testing of council’s working standards of weights, measures and testing equipment.
Compile reports of offences in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. Prepare case for Court and give evidence in Magistrates or Crown Court as necessary by liaising with solicitors or barristers.
Lead in agreed team projects.
Provide a comprehensive advice service to consumers in order to appropriately inform consumers of their legal position.
Carry out inspections of retail trade outlets, advise in respect of appropriate legislation and deal with infringements of the law as necessary.
Maintain an up to date working knowledge of legislation assigned to the service.
Develop specialist skills in areas of agreed topics.
Provide support to other officers where required.
Undertake any such other duties as from time to time may be required.
Work within established departmental procedures
Participate in the development and delivery of training for staff, developing specialist knowledge as required.
Participate in the development and updating of quality procedures, information technology and operational systems
Contacts and Relationships: (customer focus, both internal and external – describe contacts and relationships within the section or department, with other departments, the public, external groups and organisations, their purpose and frequency)
Develop and maintain contacts and relationships with other departments or external bodies as appropriate and council members.
Management and Leadership: (finance, resources, staff supervision and service delivery)
Responsible for project leadership
